Jumbo wins transport contract for world’s largest offshore wind farm
Jumbo has been contracted by DEME Offshore to ship 165 monopiles and 135 transition pieces from Aalborg to Eemshaven. The components are destined for Ørsted’s 1.4GW Hornsea Two wind farm which, once completed, will be the largest offshore wind farm in the world.
Jumbo’s scope of work also includes the project management and engineering and design of the transport cradles. The Dutch shipping company will utilize one of its K3000 class vessels which have a deadweight of 14,000 tonnes, offer free deck space 3,250 square metres and can lift up to 3,000 tonnes. According to Jumbo, the high cargo intake and lift capacity of its K3000 vessels were important factors in the choice for the company.
Ørsted’s Hornsea Two site is located adjacent to the Hornsea One offshore wind farm, 89 km off the coast of Yorkshire, UK. When complete, it will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm and provide energy to well over 1.3 million homes. Jumbo will commence transportation of the monopiles and transitions pieces in August 2020.
DEME
DEME was awarded the transport and installation contract for Hornsea Two in May last year. The Belgian offshore contractor is to install all 165 monopiles and 8.4 MW Siemens Gamesa wind turbines. For the installation of the monopiles, DEME will deploy its new flagship Orion, a DP3 offshore installation vessel that can lift 5,000 tonnes and has “an unrivalled combination of exceptionally high transport and load capacity”, according to the company. The installation of the turbines will be carried out with offshore installation vessels ‘Sea Challenger’ and ‘Sea Installer’.
DEME was also involved in the construction of the Hornsea One offshore wind farm which currently is the largest offshore wind in the world with a capacity of 1.2GW. The installation vessel Sea Challenger installed the last of 174 7MW wind turbines on October 3rd last year.
The Hornsea Two wind farm is scheduled to be completed in early 2022 and will cost over EUR 200 million to build. Jumbo’s work will start in August this year.
